FORT POLK, La. — This year marks the 16th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that took the lives of nearly 3,000 people from nearly 90 countries in New York, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Fort Polk held a ceremony at Warrior Memori- al Park Sept. 11 to honor the memory of those killed in the attacks. The bells tolled at nearby Main Post Chapel, and Chap. (Col.) William E. Godwin-Stremler delivered an invocation, fol- lowed by the singing of the National Anthem by Spc. John L. Dye, 115th Combat Support Hospi- tal. Col. Jarrett A. Thomas, Fort Polk garrison commander, offered personal insight prior to the ceremony. “Back in 2001, I was a captain attending a school at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. I was at home with my wife when we saw the planes (hit) the towers on that day,” said Thomas. “We knew that our history and our lives would change dra- matically over the next few years.” Thomas said it was important to remember “all of our patriots” from that day, including those who wear the uniform, first responders, civilians that died in the planes and in the tow- ers, at the pentagon and in a field in Pennsylva- nia. “We also can’t forget the (numerous) troops that have enlisted since Sept. 11, 2001 — about 3 million. That’s a lot of Soldiers, and we continue to send (them) to the battlefield, and it’s impor- tant to support them and remember that they are still defending our nation as well.” When Thomas took the podium to address ceremony guests, he discussed the bravery and dedication of some of those who perished. “Today we remember those first responders, who rushed into the fire and chaos to save lives and help in any possible. We remember men like Todd Beamer, a passenger on United Airlines flight 93, which had been set on a collision course with the White House. Todd Beamer placed a credit card call from the back of the plane. Reach- Vol. 44, No. 37 Published for the community of Fort Polk, La.
